However, the ongoing heatwave, with temperatures frequently exceeding 45°C and accompanied by hot, dry winds, poses a serious threat to cotton productivity. The flowering and boll development stages of cotton are particularly sensitive to high temperatures and moisture stress. Research indicates that temperatures above 38–40°C can significantly reduce photosynthesis, pollen viability, flower retention, and boll formation, ultimately resulting in substantial yield losses. Effects of Severe Heat on Cotton Extreme heat stress can lead to: * Flower and square shedding. * Young boll abortion and reduced boll size. * Increased leaf temperature and reduced photosynthesis. * Premature ageing of plants. * Reduced nutrient uptake, especially potassium and boron. * Increased susceptibility to whitefly, jassid, mites, and secondary diseases. * Reduced fibre quality and lower lint yield. Scientific Management Recommendations 1. Maintain Optimum Soil Moisture Moisture stress during flowering and boll formation can cause irreversible yield losses. **Recommendations:** * Irrigate at intervals of approximately 3–5 days during severe heat periods, depending upon soil type and water availability. * Prefer irrigation during evening, night, or early morning hours to minimize evaporation losses. * Avoid both water stress and prolonged waterlogging. 2. Improve Heat Tolerance Through Balanced Nutrition Potassium plays a crucial role in: * Osmotic adjustment. * Stomatal regulation. * Maintenance of photosynthesis under heat stress. **Recommended measures:** * Ensure adequate soil potassium availability. * Foliar application of potassium nitrate (13-0-45) may help improve plant tolerance and reduce shedding under stress conditions. * Correct boron deficiency where identified, as boron plays a vital role in flowering and boll retention. * Avoid excessive nitrogen application during extreme heat, as it promotes excessive vegetative growth and increases water demand. 3. Regular Crop Monitoring Under severe heat conditions: * Monitor crop every 2–3 days. * Assess fruit retention and flower shedding. * Identify nutrient deficiencies early. * Remove weeds that compete for moisture and nutrients. 4. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) High temperatures often favour: * Whitefly * Jassid * Mites * Thrips Recommendations: * Scout fields regularly. * Apply pesticides only when economic threshold levels are reached. * Preserve beneficial insects by avoiding unnecessary insecticide applications. 5. Use of Stress Management Products Where recommended by agricultural experts and registered for use: * Biostimulants, * Amino-acid formulations, * Seaweed extracts, * Potassium-based foliar products, may help improve crop recovery and maintain plant vigour during heat stress. 6. Agronomic Measures * Maintain optimum plant population. * Avoid excessive plant stress from cultivation operations during peak afternoon temperatures. * Ensure proper drainage because alternating drought and waterlogging further aggravate stress. Protecting Farm Labour During Heatwaves Farm workers are equally vulnerable to heat stress. Recommendations: * Avoid strenuous field operations between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. * Ensure adequate drinking water and oral rehydration. * Schedule spraying and field operations during cooler hours. Conclusion Climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and intense in Pakistan. Cotton farmers in South Punjab must adopt climate-smart management practices that prioritize: 1. Timely irrigation, 2. Balanced nutrition with special emphasis on potassium, 3. Regular pest surveillance, 4. Scientific crop monitoring, and 5. Protection of farm labour. The difference between a profitable crop and a disappointing harvest during a heatwave often depends on how quickly and scientifically farmers respond to heat stress.
